More about the trinity

April 19, 2010

In the interest of at least getting something about who we are, some basic biographical details about our players and what they do.

Ocean City Trinity is the name we give our group.  The name comes from the city where most of us met and hung out at (Ocean City, NJ) and a powerful-sounding word that rhymed with it.  We adopted the name as far back as 2006, and simply carried it forward believing our marathon team would have many of the same members.
In 2009, Ocean City Trinity was recognized as part of the Gamemarathons.com network, and now organizes that site’s versus marathons.

The core group and frequently recurring cast:

Name: Tom C.
Also known as: Arpijy, Octrinity
Age: 27
Home neighborhood: Cherry Hill, NJ
Job: Casino game tester
Previous marathons: Sonic, Mario, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Star Fox, Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda, Mario Versus (all as team lead), Suikoden (as the only player)
Fun facts:
Tom is considered the unofficial leader of the Ocean City Trinity, and as a result has the most time actually on camera and on the controller.
Tom has been responsible for getting most of the recording equipment and the art banners (except for Star Fox, which was from an outside source) for the previous marathons, took over website content after the Suikoden marathon, and the previous marathons have all been broadcast at his apartment.
Tom’s usual method for preparing for a marathon has been to run through every game on the list, frequently doing entire games in a single session, and recording the times in which it took to finish them.
Tom started dating fellow team member Sarah sometime between the Sonic and Mario marathons, in spite of having been friends for two years before.  In between Banjo-Kazooie and Legend of Zelda, they moved into the same apartment.
Tom has a recurring theme of throwing a pizza crust at someone during the marathon.  It happened on a whim during the first marathon when Alex repeatedly did a bad impression of Tina Fey/Sarah Palin, and was agreed to be such a funny moment that it was carried forward.
In some early marathons, Tom hit a top award on a slot machine minigame, an ironic fact given his day job in the casino industry.
Tom is the first person to have made literally all the progress on a marathon game, when he finished Devil May Cry 1 on hard mode completely by himself.
Tom also ran an entire marathon almost by himself, at least on certain nights, during his Suikoden marathon.  Additionally, he ran large portions of the Mega Man marathon without any onsite help.
Tom is on staff as a marathon adviser, interviewer, and general news guy at gamemarathons.com.
Tom has also crossed over to other marathon groups.  He’s appeared in person twice with Bonus Stage Marathons, for a Sonic and Resident Evil marathon, and also played Mega Man 9 remotely for the Returners’ Mega Man marathon.

Name: Sarah L.
Also known as: GremlinzRUs
Age: 26
Home neighborhood: Cherry Hill, NJ
Job: Junior accountant/graduate school student
Previous marathons: Sonic, Mario, Devil May Cry, Suikoden, Mega Man, Star Fox, Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda, Mario Versus
Fun facts:
Sarah had difficulty finishing the Sonic Adventure 1 level Lost World, and so many viewers reminded her of this that “Lost World” has become synonymous with losing many lives or taking a long time to finish a single section.  The Lost World references themselves, however, dwindled when she posted a Youtube video of her doing well at that stage.
Sarah was not expected to make it for the Mario marathon due to a death in the family, but was able to make it for the second half, where she tore through Super Mario Galaxy.  Similarly, she was not expected to make it to the Devil May Cry marathon since she was unfamiliar with the games, but attended for the first half anyway.
Sarah started dating fellow team member Tom in between the first two marathons, in spite of having been friends for two years before.
Sarah was the only guest player during the Suikoden marathon, playing segments of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 during breaks in the main event.
Sarah is the only other person besides Tom to run all aspect of a marathon with no onsite help, during a few portions of the Mega Man marathon.  She’s also the only person besides Tom to have made an appearance at every marathon so far.
Sarah has a Youtube page, where she also runs occasional Let’s Plays.  You can check it out here.

Name: Shawn M.
Also known as: Gamesha
Age: 21
Home neighborhood: Ocean City, NJ
Job: Public storage worker
Previous marathons: Sonic (website design only), Mario, Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Star Fox
Fun facts:
Shawn was responsible for most of our website hosting and content up until the Devil May Cry marathon, where Tom took over for him.
Shawn was expected to make it to the Sonic marathon, but was unable to attend due to family issues that probably could have been avoided with better planning.  We try not to let him or the family forget that.  On the flip side, he also was expecting not to appear at the Mega Man marathon, but ended up coming over for the second night.
Shawn holds the team record for staying awake the longest at our marathon, having stayed awake for all 48 scheduled hours of the Mario marathon.  He attempted to do the same thing for the Devil May Cry marathon, but in the end fell asleep on the second morning.
Shawn has announced interest in organizing a Halo marathon in the near future.  However, he’s also gone through multiple attempts to actually put it together (even though most of these weren’t totally his fault) with no clear sign of when it’s taking place yet, and so this has also become an inside joke within the group.

Name: Dan L.
Also known as: AceSox
Age: 20
Home neighborhood: Ocean City, NJ
Job: None at the moment
Previous marathons: Sonic, Mario, Devil May Cry, Star Fox, Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda
Fun facts:
Dan is the one who created our concept of win points and fail points, and is also known for creating several humorous (and serious) polls during our marathons.
Dan also started a trend of falling asleep literally under the desk of the broadcasting room, a result of the bedroom already being taken.  Yes, we’re calling it a trend because other people did the same thing later.
Dan is the first person to get a game over during the marathon, during Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Dan has a history of not being a good team player, a trait that most surfaced when he spent a large amount of time sabotaging everyone else’s progress while playing Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures.

Name: Kyle C.
Also known as: Lnk64
Age: 27
Home neighborhood: Toms River, NJ
Job: Tech support
Previous marathons: Suikoden (off camera), Mega Man, Legend of Zelda, Mario Versus
Fun facts:
Kyle made his first appearance at our marathons during the Suikoden marathon, having received an invitation from Tom to see what went on at these events.  He made his first appearance on camera during the first night of the Mega Man marathon.
Kyle is the only member of the team to be married.  As such, he has a running joke saying part of the reason he does these is to get some time away from his wife (who does not usually play video games).
Kyle is the only person to win a game on a versus marathon without having played it before, if playing as player 2 in Super Mario Galaxy 2 counts.

Name: Bern L.
Also known as: BigBadBern
Age: 23
Home neighborhood: Cherry Hill, NJ
Job: Some government office job
Previous marathons: Legend of Zelda
Fun facts:
Bern is a longtime friend of the group, one that had simply been too busy with college and living too far away to actually take place in one of the marathons.  He was, at some point, planning to attend the Sonic and Mega Man marathons, but made his actual first appearance at Legend of Zelda.

Name: Jon G.
Also known as: Randomocity
Age: 22
Home neighborhood: Cherry Hill, NJ
Job: Recent college graduate
Previous marathons: Legend of Zelda
Fun facts:
Jon is a friend of Bern that thought the idea of a game marathon was awesome, and seemed disappointed when he learned we had done so many others without knowing him.

Jeremy F.
Also known as: Oddboy
Age: 22
Home neighborhood: Ocean City, NJ
Job: Grocery store cashier
Previous marathons: Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda (moderation only)
Fun facts:
Jeremy is an old friend of the group, having reconnected with everyone a few months before the Banjo-Kazooie marathon.
Jeremy works a midnight shift at his job, and is therefore very helpful with keeping up during those odd hours everyone else wants to fall asleep.
Jeremy spent the Legend of Zelda marathon at home, moderating the chat.  Aside from this, he also made a significant contribution by donating one cent short of an amount promised that, when reached, we would smash an Xbox 360 on camera.  (Once this was realized, someone else donated almost immediately to reach this.)

Past and less frequent contributors to the team:

Name: Joe E.
Previous marathons: Sonic (moderator only), Mario, Devil May Cry, Suikoden (off camera)
Fun facts:
Joe joined the group during the Sonic marathon, having received an invitation from Tom to see what was going on during the event and eventually taking moderator responsibilities later on.
Joe has dubbed himself the “official heckler” of the team due to his sarcastic, jeering personality.  While it has gotten out of hand sometimes, we know it’s all in good fun.
Joe started dating fellow team member Alex sometime between the first two marathons.

Name: Mason B.
Previous marathons: Sonic, Mario
Fun facts:
Mason had the most fail points at the end of both previous marathons, primarily due to poor game performance.  As punishment, he had to play Sonic The Fighters at the first marathon.
In addition to the above, Mason’s tendency to lose a lot of lives or otherwise do poorly became such a problem that it was later suggested that some sort of group practice be suggested or mandatory for future marathons.
Mason was in the process of planning a Ratchet and Clank marathon after our Mario marathon, but left for army training before enough details could be figured out.  Nonetheless, we may resurrect it for when he comes back.
Mason has a strong liking for internet memes, even going so far as to rickroll us during a marathon.

Name: Alex L.
Previous marathons: Sonic (moderator only), Mario, Devil May Cry, Suikoden (off camera)
Fun facts:
Alex has consistently provided entertainment for the rest of the marathon team, usually in terms of bringing over and setting up other games in another room.
Alex’s face never appeared on camera during the first marathon, due in part to camera shyness and that he didn’t like too many of the games played then.  He eased up a bit on this later on.
Alex started dating fellow team member Joe sometime between the first two marathons.  Ironic considering his camera shyness, he seems to want everyone to know this.
For a period of about two months in the summer of 2009, Alex was the only member of the Ocean City Trinity to actually live in Ocean City.  (The others we labeled this way just live near it.)
Alex has previously announced interest in organizing a Resident Evil marathon.  He has since admitted that he is unlikely to be able to hold it, but the idea has gotten enough interest that we may resurrect it later.

Name: Chris W.
Previous marathons: Sonic, Mario, Devil May Cry
Fun facts:
Chris openly admits that he’s not very good at video games, but enjoys them anyway.  Chris has also been helpful as the peacemaker on the team, helping to resolve several in-house disputes.  Ironically, he probably won’t be back, having managed to later alienate himself from the majority of the team.

Name: Nick B.
Previous marathons: Mario, Star Fox (off-site moderator only)
Fun facts:
Nick is probably the first person to prepare for a marathon during said marathon, having been playing Super Mario World on a Game Boy Advance shortly before everyone else was playing it on camera.  The extra help paid off.
Nick is the only team member to have participated in a gaming charity event not created by us, having played in a Dance Dance Revolution event sponsored by his college.
Nick goes to college too far away to take part in many of these marathons, and as of the summer of 2010 lives full-time much closer to said college, but has been helpful for getting feedback on what to do with them.
Nick was expected to make an appearance at the Star Fox marathon.  Since he couldn’t make it in time, he instead helped out from home as a chat moderator.

Name: Phil S.
Also known as: Crescentspr
Previous marathons: Mario, Devil May Cry
Fun facts:
Phil frequently wears a black fedora, thereby proving that “fedora” means more to us gamer types than an operating system. Before you ask, no, he didn’t get this from a certain other Phil from a certain other marathon team.
Phil also has a habit of playing other games on a DS during marathons, but is willing to play the main game when asked.
Phil was scheduled to come to the Star Fox versus marathon, but dropped out without explanation. He later explained he didn’t feel he would be of much help during the event.

Name: Ricky W.
Previous marathons: Mega Man
Fun facts:
Ricky’s first appearance (and thus far, only) was at the second night of the Mega Man marathon.  Originally he announced he was not able to make it to the event, but later was able to head over anyway.
Ricky has announced interest in organizing a Call of Duty marathon sometime in the future (though we’re willing to bet he doesn’t still remember saying this).
